By six pm, the storm of people had finally subsided, and Ally sat down for a break in front of the bar. There had been locals, hordes of tourists, specialists and even a couple of news channels checking out the rare occurrence. She and Devon had served drinks non-stop, and they’d just run out of food. Devon was pleased as he’d made more tips than the whole of last week combined, and Ally was happy because… well, just because she was. She watched Madison come back from the beach, with Theo running after her, carrying a bucket.

“Mom, I got you fish!” he yelled, holding it up.

Ally felt warm inside at the sight of them. Madison had planned to spend the day on the beach to watch the spectacle, and she’d offered to hang out with Theo, who was beside himself with excitement. “You got me fish?” She laughed when he handed her the bucket full of anchovies. “Thank you, honey, that’s actually really useful right now. I’ll hand these over to Devon so he can prepare them, and I might even give you some pocket money for your effort.”

“No need, I made lots of money today.” Theo grinned as he pulled a huge pile of dollar bills out of his pockets.

“Where did you get that from?”

Madison winced and shrugged. “He never asked for it; people just tipped him naturally and who was I to stop them?” She chuckled and gave Theo an amused look. “He started throwing random information at people about pelicans, sea lions and anchovies. They were fascinated, and then more people joined in. I swear, it was so funny. Everyone was asking him questions and he knew all the answers. You’re even going to be on the news, aren’t you, buddy?”

“Really?” Ally didn’t know whether to compliment him on how he’d earned the money or not, and she could tell by the look on Madison’s face that she wasn’t entirely sure about it either. “Well, we’re going to have to watch that later, then. Well done, honey.”

Theo looked immensely proud of himself. “It’s on at eight,” he said. “And I want to go back tomorrow, the sea lions might still be there.”

“I’m sorry,” Madison said when he ran up to his room to put the money away. “I swear I wasn’t encouraging him to take money from strangers, it just happened.”

“I know. I imagine they were pretty impressed.” Ally shrugged it off. “I can’t exactly ask him to play dumb either, so it is what it is.” She looked down at the bucket in her hand and laughed. “I’ll take these to the kitchen. Want to watch the news together at eight?”

“For sure.” Madison blew her a kiss when she was certain no one was watching. “Theo and I will make us some food.”
